Guide to Rubber Grommets: Types, Sizes, and Installation

Rubber grommets are an ideal way to create a protective shield around punched or drilled holes in metal. They are often used on through-holes to protect cables, wire and conduit passing through. Some rubber grommets are closed and can be used to cover a hole to provide a clean, finished look.
Material
Most rubber grommets are made from SBR. However, SBR will break down if exposed to gasoline, oil, or lacquer solvents. For these environments, a rubber grommet made from BUNA N or Neoprene should be used instead. SBR is short for Styrene Butadiene Rubber. Sizing
Unlike metal grommets that have numbered sizes (#00, #3, #6…), rubber grommets don't have standard sizes. They come in a huge range of sizes and shapes.

Installation
For most applications, rubber grommets can be pushed in by hand.
Are bushings the same as grommets?
Bushings are similar to grommets and provide the same overall function but are made from PVC or hard plastic instead of rubber.
